The 2024 Bulk Sender Guidelines for Yahoo and Google are out – so we are breaking them down!
You might have noticed a few reputable emails sitting in your junk mail recently – and you won’t be alone! Email giants Gmail and Yahoo are on a mission to shield their users from the annoyances of unwanted emails from bulk senders. It’s all about making your inbox a safer, happier place.
As digital marketers, we’re always sure to stay on top of rollouts like this, because it can have a big impact on anyone who uses email marketing. In this case, people who send bulk emails might see their communications go straight to their customers’ spam folders. Not ideal.
Who does this impact?
Mailchimp has advised: “These new requirements primarily impact two groups of email senders:
• Large senders, or anyone who sends to more than 5,000 Gmail or Yahoo email addresses on any single day.
• Anyone who uses a Gmail email address as their “From” email address when sending emails through any email service provider, regardless of sending volume or the email domains of their recipients.”
Compliance Checklist for Bulk Senders
• One-Click Unsubscribe: Include a one-click unsubscribe link in every email.
• From Address Alignment: Align ‘From’ addresses with the brand’s domain for trust.
• DMARC Implementation: Verify sender legitimacy with DMARC; explore external tools.
• Branded Send Domain: Enhance authentication with a branded send domain.
Non-compliance consequences begin in February with temporary error codes, potential message rejection by April, and promotional message blocks by June. Expect further tightening across providers.
